In the Summer of 2017 I traveled to Greece with my family. Specifically, we visited Athens (my dad’s hometown), Mytilene (the village on Lesvos where my Yiayia, my mother’s mother, was born), then finally Santorini. It was my first visit since Yiayia passed on & we went to see the house she grew up in. Orphaned with her younger sister at an early age, they lived in that house with an adoptive relative under Nazi occupation. Now it slouches, sunbleached & structurally unsound, without anyone to care for it. Connecting with that space & simultaneously noticing the countless half-begun / abandoned housing structures scattering the various hills & coasts during that trip was the initial inspiration for [Ruins.In.Progress.] as a whole. I offer this as a kind of beginning—a tribute to all the lives that could have happened in those structures & a prayer for so many possible futures.
